Caring for your flowers in the warmer
months requires a little more attention than in cooler
months. It is extremely important to re-cut fresh flower
stems before placing them into the vase at home. This
process cuts off the dried cells which result from flowers
being out of water, even for the shortest amount of
time. A fresh cut ensures a surface of moist cells at
the tip of the stems making sure that they will soak
up water to the flowers, keeping them hydrated and enjoyable
for longer.
Keep vases of flowers and arrangements
well out of direct sunlight and away from air-conditioning
vents. Always top up water levels and if you have the
time.....a complete water change, vase clean and stem
re-cut after 2 or 3 days is a great idea!
Care and conditioning
tips for cut flowers
The vase life of cut flowers varies
with each variety. Some will simply last longer than
others; for example lilies and tropicals will outlast
softer flowers such as roses and tulips. Environmental
factors such as heating, weather conditions and air
pollutants also have a great influence on their vase
life. You can however improve their beauty and freshness
and extend the life of your cut flowers by following
these easy steps.
Simple Tips For
Cut Flower Care
- Make sure your vase has been
washed and is very clean
- Use fresh cool to lukewarm water
with a little cut flower preservative, as supplied
at purchase.
- Strip all leaves below the water
level.
- Take at least 3cm (1") off all
stems, making a slanted cut with a sharp knife or
very sharp scissors. Cutting stems at an angle gives
the stem a bigger surface area to take up water, and
stops any resistance from the bottom of the vase.
- Avoid direct sunlight, heating,
air conditioning or draughts.
- Remove any flowers or foliage
as they deteriorate
- Top up the water regularly.
- Completely change the water &
clean the vase every 4 days if possible.
Always buy flowers from a reputable
florist. Seek assistance with your selection from the
qualified florists, particularly where you are unsure.
When purchasing flowers, ensure
they are well wrapped for protection and, if the flowers
are to be kept out of water for some hours, ask the
florist to cover the stem ends with damp paper to keep
them hydrated.
Be sure to always keep flowers well
away from direct sunlight and heating.
